Quiet time particle acceleration in interplanetary space
نویسنده
چکیده
We propose a model for the acceleration of charged particles in interplanetary space that appear during quiet time periods, that is, not associated with solar activity events like intense flares or coronal mass ejections. The interaction of charged particles with modeled turbulent electromagnetic fields, which mimic the fields observed in the interplanetary medium, is studied. The turbulence is modeled by means of a dynamical system, the Gledzer-Ohkitani-Yamada (GOY) shell model, which describes the gross features of the NavierStokes equations. The GOY model is used to build a 3-D velocity field, which in turn is used to numerically solve the ideal magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) induction equation, while the electric field is calculated from the ideal Ohm’s law. Particle acceleration in such an environment is investigated by test particle simulations, and the resulting energy distributions are discussed and compared to observations of suprathermal electrons and ions during quiet periods in interplanetary space.

متن کاملMagnetic reconnection configurations and particle acceleration in solar flares
Numerical simulations of two types of flares indicate that magnetic reconnection can provide environments favorable for various particle acceleration mechanisms to work. This paper reviews recent test particle simulations of DC electric field mechanism, and discusses how the flare particles can escape into the interplanetary space under different magnetic configurations.
متن کاملIntroduction to special section on the Earth-Moon-Mars Radiation Environment Module
[1] The United States is preparing to return humans to the Moon and is setting the stage for exploration to Mars and beyond. However, it is unclear if long missions outside of low-Earth orbit (LEO) can be accomplished with acceptable risk. The central objective of the NASA Living With a Star Earth-Moon-Mars Radiation Environment Module (EMMREM) is to develop and validate a numerical module for ...
متن کاملPrediction of Body Center of Mass Acceleration From Trunk and Lower Limb Joints Accelerations During Quiet Standing
Purpose: Predicting body Center of Mass (COM) acceleration is carried out with more accuracy based on the acceleration of three joints of lower limb compared to only accounting joints of hip and ankle. Given that trunk movement during quite standing is noticeable, calculating trunk acceleration in model might increase prediction accuracy of COM acceleration. Moreover, in previous research studi...
متن کاملParticle acceleration in geospace and its association with solar events
Particle acceleration is a prominent feature of the geomagnetic storm, which is the prime dynamic process in Geospace the near-Earth space environment. Magnetic storms have their origin in solar events, which are transient disturbances of the solar atmosphere and radiation that propagate as variations of the solar wind elds and particles through interplanetary space to the Earth's orbit. During...
